Midland's booming oil and energy sector has brought thousands of millennials to the West Texas city. They said the influx of homebuyers has strained the housing market and schools, but there are perks. AdvertisementAdvertisementWith a bit of skepticism, I visited the desert city of 176,914 residents this summer to investigate how this was even possible. I learned that Midland's thriving oil and energy industry and its high-paying jobs are behind the city's millennial homeownership success. In their own words, here are five Midland residents on how millennials have brought about both positive and negative changes to the city.

On one of the 43 flights, passengers were not provided with food and water as required. “This is the latest action in our continued drive to enforce the rights of airline passengers,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. While accepting this compromise settlement "American respectfully disagrees that certain of these tarmac delays warrant enforcement action under the extremecircumstances presented," it added.

Eduardo Munoz/ReutersTreks at the airport have been getting worse ever since security changes were implemented after the September 11, 2001, attacks. In Newark, Chicago and other cities’ airport terminals, moving walkways have been removed to make room for more shops and restaurants. Some new airport terminals have recently opened without moving walkways. The airport is now building a tunnel to shorten the walk from security to the concourse. So, are people missing flights now because they have to walk so far?

Many airlines, corporate fliers and governments see so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, as a way to reduce aviation’s contribution to global warming. It recently converted an oil refinery in California and is expanding its refineries in Singapore and Rotterdam. We worked on a former fossil-fuel refinery and converted that into a renewable refinery. The carbon footprint of aviation can be affected today from today’s SAF technology. It will continue to incentivize current SAF production, but it will be difficult to be the impetus for future production.

A woman passenger who appears in a viral video of a disruption on an American Airlines flight in July is not named Jenna Wilson, a spokesperson for the airline said. The passenger also has not been charged with hate crimes, according to a Department of Justice spokesperson. But a tweet from a parody account calling her Jenna Wilson and claiming she faces federal hate crimes charges for disrupting the flight while insisting another passenger was “not real” has been taken seriously by users online. American Airlines spokesperson Sarah Jantz said in an email on July 12 that the name of the passenger in the viral clip is not “Jenna Wilson”. A search for “Jenna Wilson” with the airline name does not lead to any credible news reports supporting the claim (tinyurl.com/54wve59w).

New York CNN —Southwest Airlines’ customers are furious about the company’s Christmas week service meltdown. Southwest said that it lost about $350 million in ticket sales for January and February because people have avoided bookings on the airline. No wonder: the holidays are perhaps the worst time of the year to strand customers. One group that has clearly not forgiven Southwest as of yet is airline investors. Southwest (LUV) shares closed Tuesday down only 1% from where they closed December 19, the day before the meltdown started.
